Network Rail is the mainline infrursture owner and maintainer. Network Rail was created in 2002 to replace Railtrack who were a for profit company. Network Rail was the first part of British Rail to be renationalised. Railtrack had gone bankrupt after a number incidents on the Railway Network, including Potters Bar, Hadfield and Ladbroke Grove.

Future

Network Rail will be the base for the future Great British Railways.
