Fenny Stratford is a single-platform station situated on the Marston Vale line. Opened on 17 November 1946 as part of the London and Birmingham Railway's route between Bedford and Bletchley, the line grew and at its peak was an important artery between Oxford and Cambridge, leading it to be known as the Varsity line. However, changing traffic patterns led to rationalisation across the route, with the extensions to both Oxford and Cambridge succumbing to closure and much of the line being singled. Fenny Stratford became a single platform station, barely long enough to accommodate a two-car diesel multiple unit.
The route is operated by London Northwestern Railway using class 150 diesel multiple units, with a small fleet of three maintained at Bletchley TMD for the purpose. Previously, the route was operated by class 230 D Train units converted by VivaRail specifically for the route. However, these were permanently withdrawn in December 2022 due to the collapse of VivaRail, leading to a prolonged period of replacement bus operation to the station.
Prior to the introduction of the class 230 trains in 2019, class 150 and class 153 Sprinter trains could be found working services on the line. During our first visit to the Marston Vale branch one class 230 and one class 153 were in operation.
