Newton Aycliffe station opened on the alignment of the original Stockton and Darlington Railway, but is a much later addition to what is now the Tees Valley Line. Opened by British Rail on 9 January 1978, the station is served by trains running between Bishop Auckland and Saltburn via Darlington.

Trains are operated by Northern, with services predominantly formed of class 156 Super Sprinter multiple units, but also sees class 158 Express Sprinter trains on occasion.

The station is located close by to the Hitachi Newton Aycliffe factory, which opened in September 2015. Originally built to assemble trains as part of the Intercity Express Programme, the factory has assembled the majority of the trains for the programme as well as later derivative orders, including classes 800, 801, 802, 803, 805, 807 and 810. The factory also assembled most of ScotRail's class 385 multiple units.
