Gunton station opened on 29 July 1876 on the East Norfolk Railway's line from Norwich to Cromer. Intended primarily as a convenient station for Lord Sutton, a local landowner and major financier of the railway, the station takes its name from the Lord's residence, Gunton Hall. There is no village of the same name; the nearest being Lower Street around a ten-minute walk away. The nearest major town is North Walsham.
The station is located on a single track branch line and is operated by Greater Anglia. It is unstaffed with a single operational platform, however an unused platform and station building remain; the station was originally the site of a passing loop to enable a higher frequency of trains to operate on the branch to Sheringham - services beyond there towards Cromer were withdrawn as part of the Beeching Report in 1967, with the line now forming the North Norfolk Railway, a heritage line.
Services are exclusively provided by Stadler class 755 bi-mode units.
