OOL Schengenigans

[edit | edit source]

Saturday 14 June 2025 - 0700 onwards
Rendezvous: St. Pancras International

Join the On Our Lines crew for our second international adventure: to Schengen! To mark the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Schengen Agreement – the treaty providing freedom of movement across the European Union – we’re travelling by rail, road and air to reach the Luxembourgish town that gave the Agreement its name. We'll also be stopping off at some Stations of the Month along the way, as well as our usual friendly welcome and transport-related chatter.

Whilst this event is suitable for everyone, you will need to hold a passport if you are joining us from the UK. For our international members you will need suitable travel documents to travel in, at least, Belgium and Luxembourg. All are welcome to join, community members new and old, although in line with all On Our Lines events all members aged under 16 must be accompanied by a parent and/or guardian, whilst those aged between 16 and 18 should seek permission from their parent and/or guardian. As always, the even will be bound by the On Our Lines Code of Conduct.

Please do invite any transport-loving friends or family along too - the more the merrier! You can also chat along with the team before the event on Discord in the thread in activities-on-our-lines.

Itinerary

[edit | edit source]

Our UK meeting point is at St. Pancras International, where a contingent of OOLers will board the 07:04 Eurostar service to Brussels Midi. Here, we should have time to visit a Station of the Month or two in the area, before boarding the 10:56 SNCB/NMBS IC 509 service through to Líege-Guillemins. A quick change here then places us onto the 12:07 SNCB/NMBS IC 5312 service through to Luxembourg Gare Centrale – this is a particularly pretty bit of railway and not a journey to miss!

However, other OOLers may find it more convenient to make their way to Luxembourg by air, and – if coming from the London area – we recommend the 13:00 Ryanair service from London Stansted, landing at Luxembourg Findel Airport at 15:15.

For our rail contingent, we will reconvene at Luxembourg Gare Centrale by approximately 14:55, to board the 15:00 402 bus service to Schengen - it’s about a 30 minute journey. Those coming by air will drop back one hour, should they wish to travel to Schengen by public transport, by taking a bus or tram into the centre of Luxembourg and then the 1600 402 bus. Alternatively, Schengen is an approximately 30 minute car journey from Findel.

Our aim at Schengen is then to visit the Museum dedicated to the town, and walk to the Three Countries Point – where Luxembourg, France and Germany meet – to organise a picket line take some group photos.

Once we’ve had enough, we then return to Luxembourg City, with time for dinner, drinks or further transport explorations – maybe some of the Luxembourgish Stations of the Month.

For those returning to London, a convenient 21:50 Ryanair flight arrives at London Stansted for 22:05 (that’s one hour and 15 minutes, accounting for timezones!). Alternatively, some may wish to overnight in Luxembourg at return to London (or beyond) on Sunday – there’s a 14:55 Ryanair flight that is likely to have some OOLers on board, and if there is demand we can look to organise a group activity in the morning.

Dress Code

[edit | edit source]

Whilst we do not have any formal dress code for On Our Lines social events, we will always encourage you to wear your railway merch or pride swag, in keeping with the ethos of our community! Of course, please ensure first and foremost that you dress for the prevalent weather conditions of the day, and do ensure that any garments do not display any offensive or distasteful slogans or graphics.
