Nutfield was a late addition to the line it is situated on, opening on 1 January 1884 - forty years after passenger services on the line commenced. However, this was not the first railway use at the location - a public siding, which could be used for the sending or receiving of 'wagon load' goods, called Mid Street had existed here from the earliest days of the railway.

At opening, Nutfield was typical of other stations constructed by the South Eastern Railway, with a basic station building and waiting shelter for passengers. A signal box was also situated to the west of the platforms, with a barrow crossing also provided to allow passengers and staff to cross the line. The station buildings were demolished in the 1960s with only basic shelters provided as replacement, whilst the signal box was abolished in May 1970 following upgrade works to the route.

Further progress came in 1993, when the line through Nutfield was electrified using the third rail system as part of diversionary routes for Eurostar services, which would occasionally pass through the station between the Channel Tunnel and Waterloo station.

One train per hour operates in each direction for much of the day, operated by Southern using class 377 Electrostar electric multiple units.
