Winnersh originally opened as Sindlesham Halt due to the growth around Wokingham and the South Eastern Railway wanted to tap into that market, before being renamed to Winnersh Halt by the Southern Railway then in 1939 it was electrified under the 750V DC third rail system. In 1967 British Rail dropped the Prefix "Halt" from Winnersh Halt and it was renamed to Winnersh.
