Class 380

The class 380 is a 100mph electric multiple unit formatted of three and four coaches and are solely operated by Scotrail.
History
[edit | edit source]Siemens was awarded the contract for the class 380s on the 11th of July 2008 by Transport Scotland, as a fleet of 22 three coach units and 16 four coach units, funded by Eversholt Rail Group. The Ayrshire and Inverclyde Lines, had there stations upgraded with improved disabled access and platform extension as part of the introduction of the class 380s. The first 380 arrived in Scotland during the August 2010 and the first was in service by the 8th of December 2010. The 380s allowed for the replacement of the Class 318s and 334s on Ayrshire and Inverclyde lines to be used on the existing North Cylde and Argyle Line and additionally the newly reopened Aidrie to Bathgate line as well as replace the class 322s on North Berwick line to allow for transfer to Northern. In 2012 as part of the Paisley Canal Lines electrification the 380s were introduced on the line. Following electrification of the Whifflet Line the 380s took over the Lanark services from the class 318s and 320s. They also found temporary use on the Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh Waverley, via Falkirk from December 2017, until the Class 385s entered service. Finally following electrification of the Barrhead line in December 2023, they also took over that line from the Class 156s which used to operate that line.
