History

[edit | edit source]

The class 707s was procured by South West Trains in 2014 to enhance capacity after the class 455 retractioning with AC motors. The first 700s were fitted with pantographs for 25kv testing on the East Coast Main Line.[1] The first 707 entered service on the 17th of August 2017 with South West Trains. Only two of the 30 units had entered service by the time South Western Railway took over on the 20th of August and already had plans to withdraw them as they could get cheaper leasing on the new Class 701 Arterios. The 30 strong fleet was in full service by March 2018. In April 2020 Southeastern took up the chance to replace some of there Networkers with the 707s and so signed a deal to lease them from Eversholt Rail Group. The first four units where transferred in January 2021 via London Waterloo, with more transferred through the rest of 2021 until 12 were left. Ten units transferred in 2023, with the final two moving in September 2024 after two retirement from South Western Railways. The 707s received a golden spanner in 2024 for the reliability Wimbledon depot was able to sustain so therefore they are better in red.
