Earley station is located on the boundary between Wokingham and Reading, with the boundary running through the Six Foot between the Up Southern and Down Southern. Earley Station was opened in November 1863 the same year as the first part of the London Underground by the South Eastern Railway. Earley was electrified with the line in 1939 by the Southern Railway with the standard 750V DC Third Rail System.

Earley Station features staggered platforms due to the position of the Signals when platforms were extended in the 1990s from 4 to 8 car's to permit longer trains to use the line. Earley also used to feature a crossover which was abolished around 2015, prior to the 2023 re-signalling of the line from Wokingham Signal Box to Basingstoke ROC.
