Kirk Sandall station opened in 1991 on the South Humberside Main Line to increase connectivity around South Yorkshire. It is sited about 1km away from an earlier, short-lived station - Sandall - which closed in the 1850s. The station is comprised of a single island platform with basic facilities. Access is via a long ramp from an over bridge, making the station step-free. Two tracks bypass the platforms, one for each direction, allowing for slower freight trains to be held for passenger services.

Services are primarily operated by Northern, with regular services to Doncaster, Hull and Scunthorpe, as well as a limited service to Scarborough. These services are usually operated by class 156, class 158 or class 170 diesel multiple units. One train a day from Liverpool Lime Street to Cleethorpes also calls at Kirk Sandall, operated by TransPennine Express. The train has no return working, and is ordinarily operated by a class 185 diesel multiple unit.

Our visit to Kirk Sandall, on 25 October 2021, was to participate in the Stations of the Month competition, traveling by train to the station on a class 158 unit. From Kirk Sandall we then travelled by bus to nearby Hatfield and Stainforth.
