Spring Road Platform opened as a basic halt on 1 July 1908 with the intention of relieving congestion from nearby Tyseley. The station consisted of two basic platforms with waiting shelters, accessed via ramps from street level. It functioned as a request stop for many years, with sporadic traffic levels for the first few decades of its life.

Traffic increased steadily, assisted by the opening of a factory near to the line, with the station also being extended in length to accommodate longer trains. By 7 July 1924 the station had lost its 'Platform' suffix, becoming Spring Road, with the station also losing its request stop status as usage continues to grow.

Today, the station is served by two trains per hour for most of the week, with services generally operating eastbound to Whitlocks End and Stratford-upon-Avon, and via Birmingham Snow Hill and Stourbridge Junction to Kidderminster, Worcester Foregate Street or Worcester Shrub Hill. Services are exclusively in the hands of class 172 Turbostar diesel multiple units.
